So the questions change. Is there line of sight, and will there still be one when the trees are in leaf? Is there power, or does this need to run on a panel and a battery through January? And if it fails on a Sunday, who finds out?

Point to Point

A wireless bridge from a building that has a circuit to one that never will. Often the cheapest answer by a distance, and once the kit is in there is no second line rental.

FAQ

Common questions about remote connectivity.

We cannot get fibre. What are the options?

Usually one of three. A wireless bridge, if there is a line of sight to a building that does have a circuit, which is often the cheapest and fastest option and has no monthly cost beyond the kit. Satellite, which now means Starlink for most sites and works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky. Or 4G and 5G, which is quick to deploy and can be bonded or failed over for resilience. Which one is right is a survey question, not a catalogue question.

How far can a point-to-point link go?

Kilometres, given clear line of sight. Distance is rarely the limit; obstruction is. Trees are the usual culprit, and trees grow, so a link surveyed in winter can degrade by summer. We do a proper path survey including height, obstructions and seasonal growth, rather than standing in a field with a pair of binoculars and hoping.

Is Starlink good enough for a business?

For a lot of remote sites, yes, and it has changed what is possible on places that had nothing. It is genuinely fast and quick to stand up. The honest caveats are that it needs a clear view of the sky, performance varies with congestion and weather, and the service terms differ between the consumer and business products. Where a site cannot tolerate an outage we pair it with a cellular failover rather than treating it as the only path.

Can you connect several buildings on one site?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs. An estate, a farm with outbuildings, a park with a reception and a clubhouse. Rather than paying for a circuit into each building, we bring one good circuit in and distribute it by wireless bridge or buried fibre, then treat the whole site as one network with proper segmentation between the parts that should not see each other.

What about sites with no mains power?

Solar and battery. It is well-proven for cameras, gates, sensors and links, and the sizing is the whole job: panel and battery capacity have to survive a run of dull winter days, not an average one. We size for the worst month rather than the annual average, which is why our quotes are sometimes larger than the one that undersized it.

Do you monitor it afterwards?

Yes, and remote sites are exactly where it matters. A link at a depot nobody visits daily can be down for a week before anyone mentions it. Monitoring means we see the failure, and often see the degradation before the failure, which on a wireless link usually means something has grown into the path.
